Battery warning light on Ford Transit - alternator or battery?

The battery warning light while driving a Transit MK7 usually points to the alternator. It is one of the most commonly reported electrical faults on this generation. Quick test: voltage across the battery terminals with the engine running should be 13.5-14.5 V; a result below 13 V means no charging. Another typical symptom is a rising whine that changes with engine speed, a sign of worn alternator bearings. On the 2.4 TDCi it is also worth checking the alternator overrunning clutch pulley, whose wear causes belt judder and squeal after starting.
