Crunching when changing gears in Ford Transit - MT82 gearbox synchronizers

Crunching when selecting 2nd and 3rd gear in a Transit MK7 is a sign of wearing MT82 gearbox synchronizers. The fault usually grows after about 180,000 km and is accelerated by gearbox oil that has never been changed. Before the gearbox goes for rebuild, rule out cheaper causes: a worn clutch that does not disengage fully can give identical symptoms, as can play in the gear-change mechanism. Prevention is simple: changing gearbox oil every 60,000 km significantly extends synchronizer life, even though the manufacturer does not specify a fixed interval.
