Ford Transit 2.2 TDCi black smoke and stalling - pump SCV valve

Black smoke, hunting idle and stalling at traffic lights, especially on the 110 PS version, are typical symptoms of a worn SCV metering valve on the high-pressure pump. A dirty or worn valve meters fuel incorrectly, and the ECU compensates with the wrong mixture. Key service note: after replacing the SCV or pump, the pump learn adaptation must be performed with diagnostic equipment. Simply fitting a new valve without calibration leaves the engine running unevenly. Before replacing the valve, rule out the cheapest cause first: a blocked fuel filter.
