Ford Transit MK6 steering whines and feels heavy - power steering pump

Whining when turning, loudest while stationary, and increasing steering effort are typical symptoms of a worn power steering pump in the 2000-2006 Transit. Before replacing the pump, check two things: the fluid level in the reservoir and the condition of the power steering hose. On FWD versions the pressure hose corrodes and starts to sweat fluid, and a pump running dry whines and seizes quickly. A reddish or honey-coloured patch under the front of the van is a sign to start with the hoses, not the pump.

Pump, hose or pump pulley?

If the fluid is present and the whine remains, the pump is at fault. If the level drops, look for a leak on the pressure hose and at the steering rack. A third, less suspected part is the power steering pump pulley: when worn, it causes belt squeal and judder, often mistaken for a pump fault. After any replacement, bleed the system by turning the steering from lock to lock with the front raised.
