Ford Transit starts sometimes and sometimes not - crankshaft position sensor

If a Transit 2.0/2.2/2.4 TDCi randomly refuses to start, sometimes firing on the first crank and other times cranking with no result while the computer shows no fault codes, a common culprit is the crankshaft position sensor. A heat-damaged sensor stops sending a signal, the ECU cannot see crankshaft speed and does not trigger injection. The fault is misleading: owners often replace the fuel filter, glow plugs and injector seals, while the fix turns out to be an inexpensive sensor hidden between the engine and gearbox. When replacing it, also check the metal sensor bracket.
