Metallic clatter at idle in Transit 2.4 TDCi - crankshaft pulley

A clatter that sounds like worn tappets, heard at idle and disappearing when you add throttle, is a common Transit symptom of a delaminated crankshaft pulley. The pulley has a built-in rubber torsional vibration damper; with age the rubber hardens and separates, and the outer ring starts to wobble and hit the hub. A belt squeal despite a good tensioner can also appear. Driving with a delaminated pulley destroys the belt, alternator and, in extreme cases, can lead to crankshaft failure. When replacing the pulley, always fit a new central bolt and it is worth replacing the belt and rollers at the same time.
