Movano 1.9 DTI loses power and displays STOP after a few miles

The typical scenario is that the van starts normally, produces no smoke and drives correctly, but after several miles the engine warning light and STOP message appear, the control unit cuts power and the revs fall. Depressing the clutch and pressing the accelerator restores the revs, the van continues, and the same situation soon repeats. The cyclical nature of the symptom is the key clue: the fault appears only after a component warms up, indicating a part whose parameters deteriorate with temperature rather than permanent mechanical damage.

What should be checked, and in what order?

Start with the cheapest possibility. A blocked fuel filter restricts flow, and the symptoms intensify as fuel demand rises. The second suspect is a sticking EGR valve that jams in the wrong position once hot. On the Movano, this is one of the most frequently reported faults on this engine and causes precisely this loss of power and uneven running. Third is the mass airflow sensor, which can under-read and cause the control unit to reduce fuelling. A quick test is to unplug it: if the van runs noticeably better on default values, the sensor needs replacing. Also check the heater in the fuel-filter housing and the pump-control-unit connectors, as corroded contacts can cause faults only after the engine bay has warmed up.
