How do you remove the spare wheel from a Ford Transit?

The spare wheel on a Transit hangs beneath the rear overhang and is held by a cable-operated hoist or winch. To lower it, fit the wheelbrace from the vehicle tool kit onto the mechanism spindle. Access is through an opening near the rear bumper, as described in the instructions for the relevant body version. Turn it anticlockwise until the wheel reaches the ground and the cable hangs loose. Then pull the wheel out towards the rear and pass the cable retainer through the centre of the rim.

This is very common because the mechanism is exposed to road salt and mud for years, so the first puncture may reveal that the spindle will not turn or simply spins without operating the winch. Do not force the wheelbrace because this can strip the drive. Spray the mechanism thoroughly with penetrating oil and allow time for it to work. If the cable has snapped or the gears are slipping, replace the complete mechanism. It is an inexpensive part compared with a fine for not having a serviceable spare wheel. Lubricate the mechanism after every wheel change to prevent the problem from returning.
