Renault Master 2.3 dCi rattling on cold start

A metallic rattle lasting 2-3 seconds after starting a cold 2.3 dCi engine is a classic symptom of a stretched timing chain or worn tensioner. The sound appears before oil pressure tightens the chain and then disappears. The longer it lasts, the worse the wear. Ignoring it can let the chain jump and cause serious engine damage. Repair means replacing the full timing set: chain, tensioner and guides.
