What rattles at idle in Ford Transit 2.4 TDCi and goes quiet when the clutch is pressed?

A rattle at idle that clearly quietens when the clutch pedal is pressed is the classic symptom of a worn dual-mass flywheel. It is one of the most common and most expensive Transit MK7 faults, especially on 2.4 TDCi RWD vans used in town. Worn DMF springs also cause vibration when pulling away and a jolt when switching the engine off. Replacement should always be done as a complete set: dual-mass flywheel, clutch disc, pressure plate and release bearing, because the labour cost of lowering the gearbox is the same. Transit Center offers LUK clutch kits for 2.2 TDCi 85/110 PS with a solid flywheel and for 2.4 TDCi RWD.
