Where is the VIN located on a Ford Transit Custom?

You can find the VIN on a Transit Custom in three places. The easiest ones to access are the display window at the bottom of the windscreen, where the number is visible from outside, and the identification plate on the door pillar. The number stamped into the body, which is the one required by a vehicle inspector or the police, is in the right front wheel arch near the suspension strut tower. On models built up to around 2016 it is on the right-hand side of the strut, while on later models it is on the left-hand side, behind the wheel. To read it, turn the wheels fully to the left and shine a torch into the wheel arch. If the underside is dirty, the area will need to be washed.

I cannot find the stamped VIN. What should I do?

This is common on vehicles that have been driven through many winters because the stamped area becomes covered with dirt and surface corrosion. Clean the area around both sides of the strut tower, as its position changed between model years, but do not use abrasive paper because removing part of the number will cause registration problems. If corrosion has perforated the stamped area, the matter must be assessed by a vehicle examiner.
