Engine EcoBlue Breakthrough among diesel engines!
On 1 September 2016. Euro 6 began to include light commercial vehicles, setting a European carbon emission standards. The permissible value of the emissions of nitrogen oxides is 400 mg/kWh. About 80% less than in the Euro 5 standard. Limits on particulate emissions were reduced by 66% and amount to 10 mg / kWh. Most manufacturers decided to modernize the previously used engines. However, Ford decided to give its users a completely new unit!
For 400 million pounds built modern production engines in Dagenham (UK). The greatest achievement of this manufacturing plants has become a new family of diesel engines, codenamed PANTHER.
The new turbodiesel 2.0 EcoBlue Ecoblue replaced a 2.2 Duratorq TDCi. It is currently available in three different versions: 105, 130, 170 hp, reaching even 405 Nm! Adblue filler is just below the fuler filler, which greatly facilitates the filling. |
The new 4-cylinder turbo diesel with direct injection has a capacity of 1 995 cm and meets Euro 6 standards thanks to Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) with a 21-liter tank for AdBlue, which is last to ride off some about 10 000 km. AdBlueconverts toxic NOx from diesel engine exhaust gas into harmless nitrogen and water vapor, reducing emissions of nitrogen oxides.
Built from scratch, the new engine generation EcoBlue is 13% more economical than its predecessor. The tests carried out show that CO2 emissions per kilometer decreased to 157 grams! The new unit enables service car every 2 years or every 60 000 km.
Thanks to Camel Camp, engaged in selling, servicing and renting campers, We had oppurtunity to test Ecoblue engine with 170 horsepower in Ford Transit Camper with a total weight of 3,100 kg. Before starting the test, the car was on the odometer mileage only 32!
The first impression after firing? Very quiet motor operation despite poor soundproofing of the engine compartment. You could say that the engine is running as 4-piston petrol unit (like from BMW family) - the cabin is barely audible at idle.
There is also no rattling and no crackle, which was often in tdci 2.2 unit.
The new diesel engine Ford EcoBlue 2-liter uses a completely new architecture. The structure offers the latest solutions in the field of turbocharging, fuel injection and combustion system, as well as technology to lower internal friction.
New fuel injectors are capable of delivering up to six injections per combustion event, with each injection taking as little as 250 microseconds (0.00025 seconds) and delivering 0.8 mg of diesel.
This tiny volume of fuel is injected through eight conical holes each 120 microns in diameter (less than human hair). The new injectors deliver reduced noise levels and minimal energy wastage from the fuel pump. Oil pump with engine gear system are supplied in an oil bath by a toothed belt. Optimisation featuring unevenly spaced vanes that break up the pump’s noise frequency to make it less perceptible.
While driving noticeable difference is the transmission gear ranges. It is different from the model MK7. Racing, especially 3, 4 and 5 have been extended. As a result, there is no need for constant fatigue gear lever. Another positive surprise comes of 2000 rpm and shifting into 6th gear. We're going with the speed of 120km / h enjoying the silence! The engine can not be heard. The only sounds that come to us is the noise building camper and tires of the rear axle.
The turbocharger is the invention of an entirely new generation! The turbine is made of a light material called Inconel (rocket engine materials designed for high temperature applications). The aerospace aluminium grade compressor wheel is reduced in diameter by 10%. The reductions decrease inertia and enable faster boost performance with wheel speeds up to 240 240,000 rpm (for comparison, the previous unit reaches 160,000 rpm). It’s the result of milling (with an accuracy of 2-3 microns) from one metal piece. In this way, vibration of the compressor was reduced and thus the extended service life. The module of turbo gear replaced the old worm gear. This speeded up the work of the entire system. The compressor responds without the slightest delay in entering the relevant turnover on the control signal from the PCM. Ford is for the first time using a new mirror-image porting design for the integrated inlet manifold that precisely controls the flow of air into the cylinders – with the clockwise airflow for cylinder numbers one and two, reversed for cylinder numbers three and four.
The new engine is flexibler, quieter and more economic! Wast less energy to produce more Power! Only with EcoBlue 2.0 Diesel Engine!
However, as to these innovations in the combustion? The engine has been subjected to severe test, resulting in a fuel consumption of about 11.5 liters. For comparison, the camper with the motor 2.4TDCI MK7 burned in the same test, about 14.5 liters. Progress in the combustion is really satisfactory. The new unit becomes thus more economical and hence - more environmentally friendly. In normal, everyday operation of the engine will burn less than 10 liters. As for the 3.1 tonne weight and high buildings camper is really sensational result!
