How Often Should You Change the Oil in a Ford Transit?

Regular oil changes are one of the most important service operations in any Ford Transit. Factory service intervals can be long, especially in newer EcoBlue engines, but vans often work under load, drive short routes and spend a lot of time in traffic. For that reason, a shorter oil change interval is usually the safer choice.

How Often Should You Change the Oil in a Ford Transit?

Depending on model year and market, Ford service schedules may allow long intervals, even up to 2 years or high-mileage limits in some versions. In real commercial use, we recommend changing the engine oil every 10,000-15,000 km or once a year. For older engines, high-mileage vans and vehicles used mainly in town, shorter intervals are also recommended.

Ford Transit MK9, MK8 and Transit Custom 2.0 EcoBlue

The 2.0 EcoBlue engine is used in both the full-size Ford Transit and the Transit Custom, but oil capacity is not always the same. The larger Transit can have a different sump depending on drivetrain, while many Transit Custom 2.0 EcoBlue versions are commonly listed at around 9.1 L for an oil and filter change. Always confirm the exact service-fill quantity by VIN, engine code or owner’s manual.

How much oil for 2.0 EcoBlue?

  • Transit Custom 2.0 EcoBlue: commonly approx. 9.1 L with filter.
  • Ford Transit 2.0 EcoBlue FWD: approx. 9.8 L with filter.
  • Ford Transit 2.0 EcoBlue RWD/AWD: approx. 11.5 L with filter.
  • Use the correct Ford specification, usually 0W-30 WSS-M2C950-A for many EcoBlue applications.

Ford Transit MK8 2.2, MK7 and MK6

Older Duratorq/TDCi engines, including 2.0 DI, 2.2 TDCi, 2.4 TDCi and 3.2 TDCi, use different oil quantities depending on year, drivetrain and sump type. For workshop practice, an oil change every 15,000 km or once a year is a sensible interval for most working vans.

How much oil for Duratorq / TDCi engines?

  • Transit MK6 2.0 DI/TDCi: approx. 6.5 L with filter.
  • Transit MK6 2.4 DI/TDCi: approx. 7.0 L with filter.
  • Transit MK7 2.2 FWD: approx. 6.2 L with filter.
  • Transit MK7 2.2 RWD: approx. 10.1 L with filter.
  • Transit MK7 2.4 RWD: approx. 8.8 L with filter.
  • Transit MK8 2.2 TDCi: approx. 8.55 L with filter.

Older Ford Transit MK5-MK1

Classic Transit diesel engines, especially 2.4D, 2.5D and 2.5TD, are simpler designs, but age and wear make frequent oil changes even more important. A practical interval is 10,000-12,000 km or once a year. Many older diesel versions take around 6 L of oil with filter, but this should always be checked against the exact engine.

Oil for classic Transit diesel engines

  • Commonly used for older 2.4 and 2.5 diesel engines.
  • Suitable mainly for MK2, MK3, MK4 and MK5 diesel versions.
  • Do not use 15W-40 in modern EcoBlue engines.
