The first part of the exhaust system is the exhaust manifold attached to the studs located in the engine block. This part is exposed to very large temperature changes, therefore the materials from which it is produced must be of the highest quality. Due to temperature fluctuations, the exhaust manifold may crack. This type of damage can be repaired by welding the exhaust manifold. However, if the material around the crack is also weakened, the problem will reoccur. A leak may also appear at the connection of the exhaust manifold to the engine block. This may be due to a damaged manifold gasket or damaged studs or nuts.

The exhaust gas recirculation system (EGR), is an element of the exhaust lining responsible for the return of part of the exhaust gas to the intake manifold. The components of the EGR are the EGR exhaust gas cooler and the EGR valve. This system is used to reduce the emission of harmful substances into the atmosphere from the exhaust gases.

The diesel particulate filter (DPF), cleans the exhaust gases from PM2.5 and PM10 particles. Then the particles accumulated in the filter are burned off. Some of these particles remain in the filter as ash. Due to this, the filter should be periodically cleaned of ash. If it is filled to over 90%, its regeneration will not be possible. A completely clogged filter should be replaced with a new one.

The catalytic converter is also responsible for cleaning the exhaust gases leaving the engine. For diesel engines such as 2.3 dCi, oxidation catalysts are used. They contain noble metals that neutralize harmful substances from the exhaust gases. Due to the high price of the noble metals contained in catalytic converters, they are the target of thieves who cut them out of exhaust systems. Less text
