Short life of Ford Transit MK4

Ford Transit MK4 – the fourth generation of Ford Transit was produced in the years 1991 - 1994. Ford Transit Mark IV for its short production period of just 3 years and minor changes in the exterior styling of the van is named by many people as a facelifting model Ford Transit MK3. The new Ford Transit van used a different headlight system - more rounded than Ford Transit MK3, the radiator grille was also changed, offered in body color.

The Ford Transit MK4, despite the few changes in the external appearance, was actually a completely new design compared to the Ford Transit MK3. Practically everything had changed in the Transit MK4 suspension. It used new shock absorbers, suspension arms, spindle, springs and shock absorber mounts. Thanks to a complete redesign of the chassis, the Ford Transit MK4 gained a much bigger payload compared to its predecessor. On LWB vans, it was possible to mount single rear wheels instead of double rear wheels (doublewheels) without losing the permissible gross vehicle weight.

In some versions of the Ford Transit MK4 the bearings were changed to Timken (type 34), the drive axle in the Ford Transit version with single wheels (type 51) was also improved. Along with type 51 drive axles, a larger size of 15-inch wheels was also used instead of 14-inch steel wheels. 15-inch rims used in the Ford Transit MK4 have a 5 x 160 bolt spacing, while the central hole remains unchanged with 14-inch wheels. The Ford Transit MK4 with a long wheelbase and a 2.5-liter engine was also a participant in the Top Gear program, in which Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May tested vans below £ 1000. Vans have passed a series of tests: a quarter mile race, facility and speed of loading, bumper riding, ease of repair (in this case replacement of the driver's door), time needed for car theft (10s - an alarming result for Transit), police officers and thieves - test in which it was necessary to stay as long as possible ahead of the chase. Ford Transit, behind whose wheel Jeremy Clarkson sat, in this extremely ingenious test finished second. The episode was won by Richard Hammond at the wheel of Suzuki Super-Carry, and the last - third place was taken by James May at LDV Convoy.
