Powertrains and Performance
The 2023 Transit Custom offers multiple powertrains: diesel, plug-in hybrid (PHEV), and fully electric. The 2.0L EcoBlue diesel engine is available in 110PS, 136PS, 150PS, and 170PS. A six-speed manual transmission is standard, while a new eight-speed automatic is optional for the 136PS and 170PS versions. An intelligent all-wheel drive (AWD) system is available with the automatic transmission, while front-wheel-drive models with 136PS or 150PS can be equipped with a mechanical limited-slip differential (mLSD) for improved grip.
Transit Custom Plug-In Hybrid (PHEV)
The PHEV combines a 2.5L Atkinson-cycle petrol engine with an 11.8kWh battery, delivering 232PS and an electric range of up to 55 km (WLTP). It features drive modes such as EV Now (electric-only) and EV Charge (engine charges battery) and comes with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) for smooth performance.
E-Transit Custom
The fully electric E-Transit Custom features a 74kWh battery (64kWh usable) and comes with 100kW or 160kW motor options (136PS or 217PS). The estimated range is up to 337 km (WLTP). The van supports DC fast charging up to 125kW, achieving a 15-80% charge in around 41 minutes, while AC charging at 11kW provides a full charge in approximately 8 hours. It also offers Pro Power Onboard, allowing up to 2.3kW of external power for tools and equipment.
Payload and Capacity - Transit Custom MK3
The Transit Custom retains strong cargo and towing capabilities. The cargo volume is approximately 5.8m3 (L1) or 6.8m3 (L2), with a load-through hatch allowing items up to 3.45m in length. A lowered load floor (~575mm) makes loading easier, especially in urban environments where frequent loading and unloading are required.
The maximum payload varies by model: diesel versions can carry up to 1,350kg, the PHEV up to 1,180kg, and the electric model up to 1,010kg. Diesel models can tow up to 2,800kg, while the PHEV is rated for 2,000kg, and the electric version can tow up to 2,300kg. These capabilities ensure the Transit Custom remains a practical choice for businesses that require both efficiency and high utility.
Ford has also optimized the van’s interior for maximum usability, with additional tie-down points and power outlets available in the cargo area. Improved aerodynamics and structural enhancements contribute to a better fuel efficiency and driving experience.
Safety and Technology
Ford equips the Transit Custom with a range of driver assistance features, including ABS, ESC, airbags, Lane Keeping Assist, Intelligent Speed Assist, Pre-Collision Assist, and Rear Parking Sensors. Optional upgrades include Blind Spot Monitoring with Trailer Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control, and Reverse Brake Assist.
Inside, the van features a 13-inch SYNC 4 touchscreen with navigation, media, wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, and 5G connectivity. A digital instrument cluster provides driving information. The steering wheel can tilt to function as a work surface, a useful feature for professionals who need to complete paperwork or take breaks inside the vehicle.
Additional options include heated front seats, keyless entry, and enhanced climate control. The Pro Power Onboard system (PHEV/electric) allows external power use for tools and devices, making it particularly valuable for contractors and mobile businesses.
2023 Transit Custom vs. Tourneo Custom
The Transit Custom is designed primarily for cargo transport, while the Tourneo Custom is a passenger-oriented variant. The Tourneo offers seating for up to nine (diesel/PHEV) or eight (electric) and includes premium interior materials, flexible seating arrangements, and additional comfort features. It is designed with passenger convenience in mind, featuring improved insulation and a more refined ride compared to its cargo-focused counterpart.
Both models share the same platforms, powertrains, and technology, but the Tourneo is tailored for families, executive transport, or shuttle services. The second and third-row seats can often be removed or reversed, allowing for different seating configurations, including conference-style arrangements. The Tourneo also includes additional safety features like rear passenger airbags and dedicated rear climate control for improved comfort.
In contrast, the Transit Custom prioritizes cargo utility with a reinforced load floor, additional storage solutions, and specialized work-ready configurations. These distinctions make each model uniquely suited to different needs while maintaining Ford’s signature reliability and advanced technology offerings. |
