Engine Oil for Ford Transit

Engine oil for Ford Transit must be selected according to the engine type, production year and Ford specification. The viscosity alone is not enough — a modern 2.0 EcoBlue engine, an older 2.2 TDCi Duratorq and a classic 2.5 diesel may require completely different oil standards.

Choosing Ford Transit Engine Oil

For many newer Ford Transit and Transit Custom models with 2.0 EcoBlue engines, the correct choice is usually 0W-30 oil meeting Ford WSS-M2C950-A. Older Duratorq/TDCi engines are commonly associated with 5W-30 oil meeting the relevant Ford specification, while classic diesel engines from earlier Transit generations may use 15W-40.

Before ordering, always check the exact engine version, drivetrain and model year. The same “Transit” name covers many different generations, including MK6, MK7, MK8, MK9 and Transit Custom, so using oil only by viscosity can lead to an incorrect choice.

Oil, Filter and Service Quality

During every oil change, the oil filter should be replaced as well. Fresh oil working through an old filter is not proper maintenance, especially in vans used for delivery work, short routes or heavy loads. Regular servicing helps protect the turbocharger, timing components and emissions system.

Why Does a Ford Transit Use Engine Oil?

Some oil consumption in a Ford Transit can be normal, especially in high-mileage vans or vehicles working under heavy load. However, if the engine oil level drops quickly between services, it may indicate worn piston rings, turbocharger wear, valve stem seal problems, oil leaks or excessive crankcase pressure. In 2.0 EcoBlue and TDCi engines, regular oil level checks are important because running with too little oil can quickly damage the turbocharger, timing system and engine bearings.
