Ford Transit Timing Belt - Replacement and Specifications

The Ford Transit timing belt is one of the most important engine components, responsible for synchronising the crankshaft with the camshafts. A snapped or slipped timing belt can cause severe engine damage, which is why adhering to replacement intervals is crucial. In Ford Transit vans (from MK2 to the latest MK9), different types of timing belts have been used – from classic external toothed belts in the 2.0 and 2.5D engines of older models to modern designs integrated with the oil pump in EcoBlue units.

Types of Timing Belts in the Ford Transit

In earlier generations MK2–MK5 (1978–2000), conventional external timing belts were used, working with mechanical tensioners and guide rollers. In the 2.0 petrol and 2.5D engines, the timing belt typically required replacement every 60–90,000 km, depending on driving style and operating conditions. In MK6 and MK7 models (2000–2013), more durable toothed belts with increased strength were introduced, but it is still recommended to replace them together with the full set of rollers and the tensioner.

2.0 EcoBlue Timing Belt - the Wet Belt System

In the modern 2.0 EcoBlue engines (MK8, MK9 – from 2016 onwards), a so-called wet belt timing system is used. This belt runs in an oil bath, reducing friction and noise and improving the durability of the entire system. The wet belt also drives the oil pump, meaning its condition has a direct impact on engine lubrication pressure. In EcoBlue engines, the manufacturer recommends inspecting the belt after 100–120,000 km, with replacement carried out according to official service schedules. Replacing a wet timing belt is more complex and requires the use of genuine seals and the correct engine oil, as the oil quality directly affects the longevity of the belt.

When Should the Timing Belt in a Ford Transit Be Replaced?

For older TDDI/TDCI engines, 2.0 petrol and 2.5D units, the timing belt should be replaced every 60–90,000 km or every five years. For EcoBlue engines with the wet belt system, replacement intervals range from 150 to 200,000 km, depending on the version and operating conditions. It is worth noting that timing belt failures can be difficult to predict – symptoms such as noises from the timing cover area, oil leaks or play on the rollers require immediate inspection.
