The TRANSIMOG: Ford Transit Like No Other

Every once in a while, a vehicle build comes along that makes you stop and say, "Wow, now that is something special." Enter the TRANSIMOG, a heavily modified Ford Transit Mk7 turned off-road juggernaut and full-time home by Tom & Becca Phillips-Winn. This isn't just a van; it's a testament to ingenuity, passion, and a love for adventure.

From Humble Beginnings

The TRANSIMOG started life as a standard 2.2 RWD 135 T430 minibus. Its owner, driven by a dream of full-time Nomadic Life, stripped out the seats, threw in a mattress, and hit the road. With plans to convert the van gradually, the journey began—both literally and figuratively. The initial goal was simple: find the best spots to park for the night. It didn't take long to realize that the ideal places were often unadopted roads and green lanes. The solution? A set of mud tires, marking the first step in the TRANSIMOG’s off-road transformation.

Upgrading for Power and Performance

As the van evolved, so did its needs. The stock remapped 2.2-liter engine struggled under the weight of the conversion and off-road demands. After researching options, the owners opted for a 3.2L 5-cylinder Euro 4 engine. Known for its low torque curve and ease of fitment, it was the perfect choice. To push performance further, a larger hybrid turbo from Proformance Turbo Developments was installed, bringing the output to an impressive 270bhp and 650Nm of torque.

The TRANSIMOG was now ready to tackle serious terrain. Along with the engine upgrade, a custom steel bumper was added, proving invaluable during a collision with an articulated lorry—leaving the van unscathed while the lorry didn’t fare so well.

Chasing Ground Clearance: Super Singles and Suspension Mods

The journey didn’t stop there. Inspired by vehicles in the popular PS4 game "SnowRunner," the owners decided to experiment with Super Singles. After investing over £3,000 in suspension modifications, wheel banding, and new tires, the TRANSIMOG now boasts 21 inches of ground clearance with 285/75/16 tires on all four corners.

Next on the list? Installing a subframe spacer to gain another 3-4 inches of clearance and fitting a front prop shaft from an NP205 transfer case to a yet-to-be-chosen differential. An Eaton E-locker is also en route from the US for the rear axle—a Dana 60, allowing for even more off-road capability.

Living the Nomadic Life

Beyond its rugged capabilities, the TRANSIMOG has been equipped with full living quarters, making it a true home on wheels. Whether it's exploring remote trails or parking up in a scenic spot, this van is built to handle it all. Its owner has created a perfect blend of functionality and fun, ensuring that every trip is an adventure.

What’s Next for the TRANSIMOG?

The TRANSIMOG’s journey is far from over. With plans to install a subframe spacer, front prop shaft, and Eaton E-locker, the owners continue to push the boundaries of what this Ford Transit can do. One thing is certain: the TRANSIMOG is a rolling testament to the endless possibilities of van customization.
