What Alternator for My Ford Transit?

Choosing the right alternator for a Ford Transit depends mainly on the engine family and generation, not only on the model year. The same body shape can hide very different charging systems – classic diesels with an integrated vacuum pump, modern Duratorq units with a separate vacuum pump, and the latest 2.0 EcoBlue engines with a smart alternator and an auxiliary AGM battery.

Ford Transit MK9, MK8 and Transit Custom with 2.0 EcoBlue

Ford Ford Transit & Transit Custom with 2.0 TDCI (EcoBlue) engine the correct choice is a smart alternator compatible with the Stop-Start system and the dual-battery setup. Typical output is around 180-250 A depending on equipment level. This alternator also controls charging of the auxiliary AGM battery.

Alternator for Ford Transit 2.0 EcoBlue

  • Fits Ford Transit MK8 (from 2016), MK9 and Transit Custom MK1 (from 2016) and MK2.
  • Designed for smart charging and Stop-Start operation.
  • Replacement requires the correct pulley and electrical connector – always match by VIN.
  • Coded by the BCM in some versions; check before fitting.

Ford Transit MK7, late MK6 and Custom MK1 with 2.2 TDCi

The 2.2 TDCi engine is one of the most popular diesels in the Transit family. It appears in Transit MK7 (2006-2013), early Transit MK8 (2014-2016) and Transit Custom MK1 (2012-2016). Output is usually 130-150 A. The alternator does not include a vacuum pump – vacuum for the brake servo is generated by a separate pump driven from the camshaft.

Alternator for Ford Transit 2.2 TDCi

  • Fits Transit MK7 (2006-2013), early MK8 2.2 TDCi and Transit Custom MK1 2.2 TDCi.
  • Typical output: 130-150 A.
  • No vacuum pump on the alternator body.
  • Compatible with FWD and RWD variants of 2.2 TDCi.

Ford Transit MK6 with 2.0 DI / 2.4 TDCi

Transit MK6 (2000-2006) introduced the Duratorq family: 2.0 DI/TDCi and 2.4 DI/TDdi/TDCi. This generation is the first where the alternator is no longer combined with a vacuum pump – the brake servo runs from a separate vacuum pump. Output is typically 100-150 A, depending on the engine version and whether air conditioning is fitted.

Alternator for Ford Transit MK6 2.4

  • Designed for Transit MK6 2.4 DI / TDdi / TDCi diesel engines.
  • No integrated vacuum pump.
  • Output typically around 130-150 A.
  • Common replacement part on high-mileage MK6 vans used in city delivery work.

Ford Transit MK5 and older 2.5 diesel with vacuum pump

In Transit MK3, MK4 and MK5 diesel versions (2.5 D, 2.5 TD), the alternator is built with an integrated vacuum pump. The pump sits on the back of the alternator housing and generates vacuum for the brake servo. When the alternator fails, both the charging system and the vacuum supply are affected – brake assistance becomes noticeably weaker. Always replace it with a version with the same vacuum pump configuration.

Alternator for Ford Transit 2.5 diesel (with vacuum pump)

  • Fits Transit MK3, MK4 and MK5 diesel engines (2.5 D / TD / TDdi).
  • Integrated vacuum pump for the brake servo.
  • Typical output: 70-120 A.
  • Check bracket type and pulley before ordering – several variants exist within MK3-MK5.

Ford Transit Connect MK1 (1.8 D / TD / TDCi)

Transit Connect MK1 (2002-2013) uses 1.8 Duratorq diesel engines and 1.8 Duratec petrol. Alternators come in two main variants: with air conditioning (different bracket and pulley) and without air conditioning. Always verify which version is fitted before ordering.

Alternator for Ford Transit Connect MK1

  • Fits Connect MK1 1.8 D, 1.8 TD and 1.8 TDCi.
  • Two main variants: with and without air conditioning.
  • Typical output: 90-120 A.
  • Cheaper than full-size Transit alternators.

Ford Transit MK2-MK4 petrol (1.6 / 2.0 OHC)

For classic petrol Transits with 1.6 OHC and 2.0 OHC engines, the original equipment was either a Motorcraft or a Lucas alternator. These are simpler, lower-output units (around 55-75 A). Replacement parts are still available and significantly cheaper than diesel alternators.

Alternator for classic 1.6 / 2.0 OHC petrol Transits

  • Fits Transit MK2, MK3 and MK4 with petrol 1.6 and 2.0 OHC engines.
  • Output typically 55-75 A.
  • Available in Lucas and Motorcraft versions.
  • Affordable for restoration projects and high-mileage classics.

How much does a new alternator for Ford Transit cost?

Prices in our shop start at around £52 for classic petrol alternators (Transit MK2-MK4 with 1.6 / 2.0 OHC engines) and reach about £190 for diesel units used in MK6 2.4 and EcoBlue applications. Most popular diesel alternators – 2.2 TDCi (MK7, early MK8, Custom MK1) and 2.5 diesel with vacuum pump (MK3-MK5) – are typically priced around £141-£152. The newest 2.0 EcoBlue alternator costs around £167. Used alternators with a starting warranty are also available at lower prices.
